Session Guide

What to Wear on Your Photo Shoot

The best outfits make you feel confident and blend together like a masterpiece. Here's how to plan what to wear for your session.

01 Start with a color theme

Look at the colors in your home — the tones you surround yourself with are the tones these portraits should live among. Pick two primary colors plus a third complementary accent, then choose clothing that falls within that palette.

02 Choose clothing that gives you confidence

This is the top priority. Feeling good in what you're wearing makes a tremendous difference in how you photograph. It's okay to splurge a little — these images will live in your family for years.

03 Add texture and accessories

Vary your looks with textures and accessories that add personality. Solid colors or small, simple prints work best — small prints for children, solid tones for adults, all within the same tonal range: pastels, primary colors or earth tones.

04 Coordinate, don't match

For families and couples, coordinate within your palette and keep everyone at the same level of 'fancy'. Mismatched formality is the most common thing that breaks a group portrait.

05 For children

Pastels suit babies; primary colors suit older kids. Avoid large logos and animal characters that pull the eye from the face. Bring a favorite toy — it brings out personality.

06 A few reminders

Ladies, bring lipstick and powder. Gentlemen, bring a belt. If you need a haircut, get it at least a week ahead so it looks natural. And be ready to sit on the ground and have a little fun!
